Ear pain, a burning or itching sensation, fullness, and sometimes discharge are common signs of an ear infection or inflammation. When swelling accompanies bacterial growth, relief often requires both an antibiotic and a steroid to calm inflammation. Ofloxacin/Dexamethasone is a prescription ear drop that combines these two actions under professional guidance.

What Ofloxacin/Dexamethasone is (brief)

This medicine is formulated as an otic preparation for use in the ear. It contains two active ingredients: ofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that kills susceptible bacteria, and dexamethasone, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and swelling in the ear canal.

The combination is designed for short, targeted courses to ease pain and help infection clear, while minimizing inflammation around the ear. It is not intended for use in the eye, nose, or for systemic treatment.

Always use the product exactly as prescribed by your clinician or per the label directions, and ask your pharmacist if anything about the dosing or timing is unclear.

What conditions it treats

The primary targets are infectious and inflammatory problems of the ear. It is commonly prescribed for acute otitis externa, an infection of the ear canal that causes sharp pain, itching, and sometimes discharge, as well as selected middle-ear infections where antibiotic coverage is appropriate.

The dexamethasone component helps reduce redness, swelling, and the sense of pressure that can accompany infection. By dampening the inflammatory response, many patients experience faster symptom relief.

Your clinician will decide whether this medicine is suitable, especially if the eardrum is perforated or if you have a history of ear surgery, recurrent infections, or fluid in the middle ear. A careful exam guides the safest choice.

Practical usage guide — timing, dosing, missed doses, storage

Before using, wash your hands and inspect the bottle. Shake if instructed and sit or lie with the affected ear upward. Keep the bottle clean and avoid touching the dropper tip to prevent introducing more germs.

Administration requires gentle handling of the outer ear. For adults and older children pull the pinna up and back to open the canal; for younger children, pull down and back. Instill the prescribed number of drops and keep the head tilted a few minutes to help uptake.

Dosing and duration are typically guided by a clinician; a common plan is about 4 drops in the affected ear twice daily for around 7 days. Do not stop early, even if you feel better, unless your doctor instructs otherwise.

Missed doses should be taken as soon as remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not double-dose to catch up. Store the bottle at room temperature away from light and moisture, and discard after the expiration date.

What to watch for — side effects in plain language

Most people tolerate the drops well. Common side effects include a brief burning or stinging sensation in the ear after application, mild itching in the ear canal, or a temporary metallic taste if droplets reach the back of the throat.

Less common effects may include increased ear fullness, redness around the ear, itching or irritation on the skin near the ear, or dizziness. If discharge worsens or you notice new symptoms, tell your clinician.

Serious reactions are rare but require urgent attention. Seek medical help for signs of a severe allergy, such as swelling of the face or tongue, trouble breathing, severe ear pain, unusual severe rash, or a sudden change in hearing.

When to consult a doctor

If there is no sign of improvement after 48–72 hours, or if symptoms worsen, contact a clinician promptly. A fever, spreading redness, swelling behind the ear, or severe ear pain can indicate a complication that needs review.

Tell your doctor about other medicines you are using, any prior ear conditions, a known perforation of the eardrum, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, and any allergies to fluoroquinolones or corticosteroids. This helps tailor the safest plan.

Remember this medicine is for ear use only. Do not apply it to the eye, and do not share the bottle. If you have questions about interactions with other ear products or about ongoing ear care after treatment, consult a healthcare professional.
