Irbesartan is a medication in the class known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). It blocks the effects of the hormone angiotensin II on blood vessels, which helps them relax. This lowers blood pressure and can protect the kidneys in people with diabetes. In many markets it is sold as a generic drug and under the brand name Avapro.
Irbesartan binds selectively to the AT1 receptor. By blocking this receptor, angiotensin II cannot tighten arteries or raise aldosterone levels. The result is lower blood pressure and less strain on the heart. Effects develop gradually over days to weeks, as the body adjusts.
It is prescribed mainly for hypertension and for protecting kidney function in adults with type 2 diabetes and albuminuria. It may be part of a broader treatment plan that includes diet changes, exercise, and other medicines. Your doctor decides the dose based on your condition.
Take Irbesartan exactly as prescribed. The usual starting dose is 150 mg once daily, which may be increased to 300 mg daily if needed. Take it with or without food. Do not double dose if you miss one. If you miss a dose by a long time, skip it and resume normal schedule.
Common side effects are dizziness, fatigue, and stomach upset. Some people notice headaches or flushing. A small number may have higher potassium levels, which requires tests. Seek urgent help for swelling of the face or lips, trouble breathing, or severe allergic signs.
Tell your doctor about kidney or liver problems before starting Irbesartan. Pregnancy should be avoided, as the medicine can harm the unborn baby. Breastfeeding safety is not fully established. It can interact with NSAIDs and with potassium supplements, so monitor electrolytes when needed.
Let your pharmacist know all medicines you take, including over the counter drugs and herbal products. Avoid combining Irbesartan with potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements. NSAIDs may reduce its effect on blood pressure. Some drugs may require dose changes.
People with a history of swelling of the face or tongue after using ARBs or ACE inhibitors may be more prone to this reaction. Those who are pregnant or planning pregnancy should not use Irbesartan. Those with severe kidney or liver disease should use it only under close supervision.
Store tablets in a cool, dry place away from light. Keep the medication in its original packaging until use and out of reach of children. Irbesartan is available only with a prescription and is often sold as a generic product alongside brand names. Buy only from licensed pharmacies to ensure quality and authenticity.
