Loratadine is selective for peripheral H1 receptors, which minimizes sedative effects compared with older antihistamines. It does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier, so daytime use is less likely to cause drowsiness. After you take it, the body converts it into desloratadine, an active metabolite, helping sustain the effect.
The medicine reduces swelling of mucous membranes and blocks histamine-driven symptoms. Most people notice relief within hours, with a full daily effect lasting about 24 hours.
The main uses are allergic rhinitis symptoms: sneezing, runny or itchy nose, and itchy, watery eyes. It is also prescribed for chronic urticaria, or hives, to lessen itching and redness.
Loratadine is suitable for adults and many children, following labeling for age-specific dosing.
Take loratadine by mouth with a glass of water. It can be taken with or without food. The typical adult dose is 10 mg once daily.
Children's dosing follows age or weight, and forms include tablets, dissolving tablets, and syrup. Do not exceed labeled amounts.
Do not take loratadine if you are allergic to it. Tell your clinician about kidney or liver disease, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Limit alcohol and sedatives, as drowsiness risk is still possible even if low. Store at room temperature and keep out of reach of children.
Headache is common. Some people report fatigue, dry mouth, or stomach upset.
If you notice severe swelling, rash, trouble breathing, or signs of an allergic reaction, seek care.
