If you notice thinning hair on the scalp, or a receding hairline, you may have pattern hair loss. This is common in adults and can affect how you feel about yourself. Minoxidil is a medicine you apply to the scalp to help hair regrow or slow loss. It comes as a liquid or foam you place directly on thinning areas.

What Minoxidil is and how it works

Minoxidil is a medicine you apply to the scalp. It is a local treatment, meaning it works where you put it. It helps hair follicles stay active.

When you apply it, minoxidil can increase blood flow to the hair roots and extend the growth phase of hair. This supports the growth of new hairs and can slow further thinning over time.

Common medical uses

Minoxidil is approved for adults with androgenetic alopecia, also called pattern hair loss. It helps both men and women who have thinning at the crown or temples.

It is used on the scalp only. It is not a cure and it does not work for everyone. It should not be used on children, and you should follow the labeling for adults.

How it is typically taken

You usually apply minoxidil to a dry scalp, twice a day. For liquid, use about 1 mL per application. For foam, use about half a capful.

Let the product dry completely before you touch your hair or put on a hat. Do not wash the treated area for at least 4 hours after use, and wash your hands after applying. Do not use more than directed by your clinician or the label.

Important safety information

Do not use if you are under 18, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor before use if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, or chest pain.

If your scalp becomes very irritated, red, or swollen, stop use and contact a clinician. If you feel dizzy, faint, or your heart beats very fast, seek medical help. Keep minoxidil away from children and pets. Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture.

Common side effects

The most common effects are mild scalp irritation, itching, redness, or dryness. These usually improve after a few weeks of use.

Less often, you may notice unwanted hair growth on areas that touch the scalp product, such as the hairline or forehead. If irritation persists or increases, stop using and consult your clinician.
