Fluconazole is an azole antifungal medication that blocks a fungal enzyme needed to build its cell membrane. Its primary use is to treat yeast infections and other fungal infections affecting the mouth, throat, esophagus, urinary tract, abdomen, and skin.
You can take fluconazole by mouth as tablets or a liquid, or receive it by IV in a hospital if needed.
The medicine travels through your blood to reach many parts of the body, including the brain and urinary tract. It is often well tolerated, and your doctor will decide how long you should take it. Some infections need several weeks of therapy.
Primary uses include treating yeast infections such as vaginal candidiasis, oral thrush, and esophageal candidiasis. It also helps treat fungal infections of the skin and nails in some cases. These infections are caused by yeasts or other fungi and can feel uncomfortable.
Fluconazole can be used for certain systemic infections. It is commonly used for cryptococcal meningitis in combination with other medicines, and to prevent fungal infections in people with weakened immune systems. Your doctor will choose the right dose based on your infection and health.
Your doctor may prescribe fluconazole for other Candida-related infections or fungi, depending on location and severity. Dosing and duration vary; follow the plan you are given and report side effects. Tell your clinician if you have liver or kidney disease, as this may change the plan.
Fluconazole blocks lanosterol 14α-demethylase, an enzyme fungi use to convert certain lipids into ergosterol, a key building block of the fungal cell membrane. This step is important for the fungus to keep its membrane intact.
With less ergosterol, the membrane becomes leaky and the fungus cannot grow as well. Humans do not rely on ergosterol in their membranes, so the medicine tends to affect fungi more than people. Fluconazole also penetrates well into body fluids, including the spinal fluid, which helps treat certain brain infections.
Most people tolerate fluconazole well. Common side effects include headache, nausea, stomach upset, diarrhea, or a skin rash.
Serious problems are rare but can include liver problems or severe allergic reactions. Seek medical help if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, persistent belly pain, or clay-colored stools.
Fluconazole can interact with other medicines. Tell your clinician about all pills and supplements you take, including vitamins and herbal products. People with liver or kidney disease may need dose adjustments, and it should be avoided in pregnancy or during breastfeeding unless advised by your doctor.
