What is Ofloxacin, and can it help my infection? Ofloxacin is an antibiotic. It belongs to the fluoroquinolone family. It fights bacteria by stopping them from multiplying.
Your doctor may prescribe it when a bacterial infection needs treatment. You take it by mouth or as directed. Ofloxacin does not work for viruses like colds or the flu.
Ofloxacin is used to treat several bacterial infections. It is commonly prescribed for urinary tract infections, such as bladder infections. It also helps infections of the skin, throat, lungs, and some stomach or bowel infections.
Your doctor will decide if Ofloxacin is right for you. It may be used for pelvic infections or some prostate infections. It can also treat certain gynecologic infections or stubborn skin infections.
Take Ofloxacin exactly as prescribed. Do not change the dose on your own. Take it with a full glass of water.
You can take it with or without food. If you have a sensitive stomach, taking it with meals may help. Space doses evenly through the day and take them at roughly the same times.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double up. Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture. Keep it in its original container and out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date.
Most people have mild side effects. These can include nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, dizziness, or headache. Some people may feel rash or itching.
There are more serious risks, though rare. Seek urgent care if you have trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or severe dizziness. Stop the medicine and tell your doctor if you have tendon pain, tendon swelling, or weakness. You may also be more sensitive to the sun.
Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after a few days. If your infection gets worse, seek care sooner.
Before taking Ofloxacin, tell your doctor about pregnancy or breastfeeding, kidney or liver problems, or a history of tendon problems or seizures. If you notice severe side effects, stop the medicine and call your clinician.
